Brunvoll Delivers Its First Dynamic Positioning System to the Norwegian Sea Rescue Society

Brunvoll has delivered its first dynamic positioning system (DP0) to the Norwegian Sea Rescue Society (Redningsselskapet, or RS). The system was installed on RS's largest rescue vessel ever built, which will be stationed in Mehamn and is capable of speeds of up to 30 knots. Mar-El supplies the vessel's propulsion control system.

According to Dag Sverre Grønmyr, VP Engineering and Autonomy at Brunvoll, tuning such a high-speed vessel for DP operations was especially demanding: small changes in propeller pitch produce an immediate response, so holding the vessel steady requires a high degree of precision.

A Brunvoll team carried out installation and commissioning together with the vessel's crew, extensively testing the interfaces to the propulsion system, thrusters, sensors and position references, and adjusting the DP system's mathematical model to ensure stable positioning. Grønmyr described the project as an important reference, being Brunvoll's first DP delivery to RS. Further follow-up and fine-tuning is planned before the vessel enters full service.
